Native Foreign created a documentary exploring the history and cultural significance of Seattle's iconic landmark.
A Monument to Vision and Legacy
Native Foreign partnered with the Space Needle team to produce Space Needle: Looking Upwards, a feature-length documentary exploring the rich history and cultural legacy of Seattle’s most iconic landmark. The film traces the tower’s origins at the 1962 World’s Fair, capturing the visionary spirit behind its futuristic design through rare archival footage and in-depth interviews with original engineers, historians, and key figures. It also highlights the Space Needle’s enduring role in shaping Seattle’s identity; both as an architectural marvel and as a symbol of innovation and imagination.
Transforming Icons, Frame by Frame
At the heart of the documentary is Olson Kundig’s ambitious Century Project, a $100 million renovation that redefined the visitor experience without compromising the Needle’s timeless silhouette. With unprecedented access, Native Foreign documented the transformation; from the installation of the world’s first rotating glass floor to the floor-to-ceiling glass walls that invite guests to step into the sky. Premiering at major festivals like SIFF and Bumbershoot, before streaming on Amazon Prime Video- the film is both a tribute and a time capsule, capturing how one structure continues to inspire awe, six decades after it first pierced the Seattle skyline.
